A beginner's guide to drinking better, Natural wine style

Natural wine is no longer just a niche trend - it’s a global movement. From Paris to Tokyo to Lisbon, more people are discovering the joy of drinking wine that feels alive, honest, and unfiltered—literally and figuratively. But what exactly is natural wine, and what can you expect when you walk into a natural wine bar for the first time?

At Studio Marvila, a creative hub and wine bar in Lisbon’s up-and-coming artistic district, we’re here to demystify it all, no snobbery, just great wine and good vibes.

What Is Natural Wine, Exactly?

Natural wine is made with as little intervention as possible from vineyard to bottle. That means:

  • No synthetic pesticides or herbicides in the vineyard

  • Native yeasts used for fermentation

  • Minimal or no additives (including sulfites)

  • Unfiltered and unfined, giving it texture and character

The result? Wine that expresses the grape, the soil, and the season it came from. Every bottle tells a story, and every glass is slightly different sometimes wild, sometimes funky, always alive.

How a Natural Wine Bar Is Different

A natural wine bar isn’t just about what’s in your glass—it’s about how it feels to drink it. Unlike traditional wine bars that focus on polished menus and textbook tasting notes, natural wine bars celebrate imperfection, spontaneity, and surprise.

What makes a natural wine bar unique:

  • A focus on small producers and independent winemakers

  • Wines that are often organic, biodynamic, or regenerative

  • A relaxed, unpretentious vibe

  • Staff who are passionate about storytelling, not snobbery

  • Playlists, mismatched chairs, and a community feel

At Studio Marvila, we’re proud to be part of this movement in Lisbon, offering a wine bar experience that’s welcoming, creative, and grounded in connection.
